SAR Awareness for First Responders– an Overview (Course # 01)

Topics covered:
What is SAR? Most people, including local officials, Fire and Law Enforcement in charge of local SAR events are ignorant to what SAR really is. Not because they are dumb or closed minded, but because they have never received any form of training about what SAR is. It is not something that is typically used in many communities, so there is a lack of training as time and resources are more wisely spent on other current and identified needs. When most people hear ‘Search and Rescue’, they have the image in their minds of a bunch of people lined up going through the woods or fields looking for little Johnny or Sally. That is not what SAR is. That is one tactic, but it should not always be used! This course provides an overview of what SAR is, what resources are available, when different resources should be used or considered, who should be in charge, and how to access trained – and often FREE – resources to effect a local SAR. The course also covers information to consider to reduce liability to local officials, Fire and Law Enforcement, and volunteers when they are faced with a SAR incident.

Who should attend:
Any person who has any level of involvement or interest in SAR from Planning, Management, Logistics, Command, to Field Searchers – both paid and volunteer.
